Web Safari Common Questions and Answers
Q: Where does Web Safari run? On my server?
A1:
Web Safari installs on your web server. This can be
the same server as the fileserver that holds your
Surpass database files, or it can be a separate
server, as long as the web server and file server
are on the same local area network (LAN speed of 100
mbps or greater recommended).
A2: If your library
subscribes to Surpass
Hosting Service, Web Safari runs from our
servers with your other Surpass applications.

Q: Do you recommend a separate server for Web
Safari?
A: It depends on the number of databases being
hosted or the size of the combined database for a
centralized installation with Centriva. High
volume installations where the collections for many
libraries are being hosted (20 or more) may benefit
from a separate web server.

Q:
Can you host Web Safari for us, or can our web
hosting provider host it?
A: Because Web
Safari makes your collection available live it
must have direct high-speed (LAN speed) access
to your Surpass database files. If you would
like for us to host Web Safari, we must also
host your other Surpass applications and data.
This is available through
Surpass Hosting Service.

Q: For distributed (site-based) installations, do we
need a web server for each location?
A: No, one web server and run Web Safari and make
multiple library databases available. Note
that in this environment, collections are not
combined for single searching (as they are with
Centriva, our centralized solution). Also note
that the web server must have LAN-speed connections
(100 mbps or higher recommended) to all fileservers
from which it will be pulling the catalog to make it
available over the Internet.

Q: Can Web Safari run on Linux?
A: Web Safari is a Windows application, so it must
be installed on a Windows-based web server, such as
Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003.

Q: Can Web Safari run Apache?
A: Probably -- as long as it's the Windows version
of Apache. Web Safari should run on any
Windows-based web server platform, although all
testing and support is for use with Microsoft
Internet Information Server (IIS).
