RFID is a
high-tech, time-saving system once reserved
for only the largest libraries with the
highest budgets. Now you can enjoy the same
technology in your school library!
RFID (radio frequency ID) is increasingly
replacing barcodes in libraries throughout
Europe and the United States. RFID combines
security, circulation, and inventory
functions into one amazing technology.
How RFID
Works
An RFID system is a replacement for barcodes
on library items. An RFID tag is inserted
in each book. This tag is similar to a
regular sticker or label, except that it has
a tiny computer chip attached. This
computer chip is encoded with the item
number of the book.
The computer chip can be read by the various
RFID hardware components such as the
circulation desk reader, the portable
inventory reader, and the security gates at
the doors.
Special
functions of RFID
Stack
check-out:
Place an entire stack of books on the
circulation desk reader. With one
keystroke, the whole stack is checked out to
the current patron - no need to find and
scan barcodes on books one at a time!
Stack
check-in:
Remove stacks of books from your book return
drop box, place them on a pad, and check
them in with a single click!
Self-Check:
When used with our self-check kiosk, patrons
can check out their own materials. The
self-check kiosk will automatically set the
tags to "check out" mode to allow them to
pass through the security gates without
sounding the alarm.
Inventory:
Inventory has never been faster than with
RFID. Using a portable RFID reader, the
user can simply pass the wand in front of a
row of books, along the spines. You won’t
need to remove the books from the shelves…or
even touch them at all!
